"Borat Subsequent Moviefilm" (2020)

It feels like such a unexpected treat. Only weeks ago when they announced did I hear about the film and was over struck with joy. My fiancé and I are massive “Borat” (2006) fans. Most of our video game character alias’ are “Wawawewa”. It’s been a part of my life since I can remember. “Borat” (2006)” is like universal mythology to me now. In a similar way, with hearing about this latest news on bringing Showtime's “Dexter” back, I couldn’t have predicted that something I adored so much could come back like this. You would think in a world of sequels and franchises I’d have thought of everything. But damn am I glad that they somehow made one of the greatest sequels of all time let alone greatest films of all time, without me evening knowing about it until weeks before release. It’s the greatest gift I don’t feel I deserve.

Sacha Baron Cohen in "Borat Subsequent Moviefilm" (2020)

The entire time I was watching this I couldn’t help but keep thinking I’m just so happy this exists. I’m still pinching myself a sequel is already made and available to watch all within months of announcement. It was so great to see Sacha Baron Cohen back in action. I was, of course, worried that the film would tire with recycled jokes and favorites but every frame that flew by showed me how wrong I was.

Not only does it succeed for me as a sequel but having a bigger potential to actually impact some things that need changing. It’s a feat that not every can make. Barely even documentaries. So when a comedy like “Borat” (2006) can get comedy heads thinking like I did I’m extremely grateful. It’s shines a light on so many real people and we laugh half the time because we’re so shocked that they took Sacha Baron Cohen’s humor seriously. The doctor who said that perverts can only watch if they’re doctors? Sacha Baron Cohen jokingly said that but the fact that she went with it thinking he was serious only reveals the truth within her. It’s the best kind of trolling.

I commend this movie on so many levels. The discretion they went through just to make it! I can’t believe I didn’t know about this! With a world of a social media and iPhones you’d think something would leak. I mean it did, his Wu-Han flu song rally was captured and released on YouTube months before announcement but i don’t think we, or at least I, could’ve predicted it was in relation to filming a “Borat” (2006) sequel.

As my fiancé said, it’s hard to pick a favorite between the two. Normally with sequels the first is an obvious choice, let alone with comedies or whatever genre you want to categorize “Borat” (2006) in, but with this one they both feel like instant classics and unique enough on their own to be stand-alone cinematic masterpieces.

"Borat Subsequent Moviefilm" (2020)

Maria Bakalova is truly the greatest addition to this film. She was something I felt didn’t feel forced yet felt like the perfect direction that “Borat” needed to take. It felt natural, she was so funny, and was able to keep up and even go above and beyond Sacha Baron Cohen. I can’t wait to see what they do next.

Sacha Baron Cohen in "Borat Subsequent Moviefilm" (2020)

The last thing I want to do is spoil this film. It’s the best return you could possibly want for one of our favorite characters in cinema. I couldn’t feel more for what this film was trying to say. It really is an honest reflection of where humanity has come and is at. This film works for its truth, bravery, and sheer comedic genius.
