I had the lovely pleasure of going into this movie pretty cold. I highly recommend it. No trailer. No synopsis. I knew Eddie Murphy was in it and my boy from Disney+'s “WandaVision”; David Lengel, also having a small part in this, but that was it.

From the opening credits I was just jaw dropped by each cast member name showing. I was already more than happy with the original cast, but what an addition of talent they’ve added to an already full plate of favorites. It seems like such a fun project for them all to reunite and relive those characters in a new light for a new generation, but the opening sequence alone is a perfect homage to the original as is the rest of the film throughout.

So much fun, you can tell every actor is just so damn happy to be there and that’s really all I think we want. Is seeing our beloved characters reunited, making us laugh and feeling a beautiful mix of nostalgic emotions.

I mean, this seriously goes back to one of the earliest R Rated films I was allowed to see and was a true childhood favorite. My parents were big “Saturday Night Live” fans so I had a nice diet of Eddie Murphy in my growing years. I heavily associate the original with watching with my late mom. Embarrassingly, but grateful to remember, she’d always crack up the hardest from the original; “The royal penis is clean, your highness”. Good memories.

So many talented actors of our time showing up in this.. I almost consider them all cameos, so I won’t mention too many. Wesley Snipes was a hoot to watch. So much fun and just got to see a really great side of him, at least one I hadn’t seen before. That military training sequence was too funny! Leslie Jones I always, always love! One of the funniest living comedians!

I loved how story wise it didn’t feel too forced. At least in any way I found worth complaining. I could never have predicted “Coming to America” (1988) having a sequel, but I think they did a pretty brilliant job that was able to adapt to the times in a genius and equally funny way. A great addition to some of the modern comedy classics. Such a fun movie!

Will definitely be adding the first “Coming to America” (1988) to my Gem Mint series when I get the chance.

"Despite everything that could've gone wrong with it, Coming 2 America got enough right to be entertaining." - Damond Fudge, KCCI (Des Moines, IA)

"Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall are back 30 years after they first set foot in America for the sequel by Craig Brewer which plays like a greatest hits package." - Joe Friar, The Victoria Advocate

"Coming 2 America confidently moves to the comedy rhythms of where we are now. And because of its willingness to transform it is a smarter, funnier and ultimately sweeter movie than the legend that begat it." - Melanie McFarland, Salon.com

"It's a compelling and complicated emotional journey that forces Lavelle-like his father before him-to navigate his Blackness in a new, vibrant Black environment." - Adesola Thomas, Paste Magazine
