I first heard about "Greyhound" (2020) from my dad whose mutual friend of ours, Rick, had a small role in and we wanted to check it out. Before I even could get my hands on the film the only advertisements I started seeing were for "Greyhound" (2020)! It was everywhere! I was so happy for Rick and Aaron Schneider ("Two Soldiers" (2003 short film, Oscar winner) & "Get Low" (2009).
War movies are NOT my FIRST choice. I love them and can appreciate them but it's not my favorite thing to live through a war for 2 hours every day (and I like to watch at least one a day). But to be fair, let's not generalize because I certainly did before watching this film.
I was surprised to find this movie to be such a character piece amongst the spectacle. Schneider keeps you focused on the waves of Tom Hanks emotions. Being a Tom Hanks fan and life long follower, and I think a lot could say the same, I felt safe in the hands of Tom Hanks (pre-coronavirus Tom Hanks) ESPECIALLY amongst all the boat, military or naval language that I am very NOT familiar with. I was worried at first that I wasn't going to be able to follow anything but soon Hanks, and the story, took over and swept me off my feet.
Tom Hanks in "Greyhound" (2020)
It's a claustrophobic feeling being on the ship with the crew, the way they film it, the lack of environmental diversity but also, of course, the nature of the story and situation itself. A continuous, beating tension lives throughout the film. It keeps you on the edge on your seat and I found myself as engaged as the characters in the film.
It's a nice change of pace from your average WWII picture. I'm used to the big story but I found this one, one mission, to be fascinating in it's lack of grandeur. Which at the same time made it feel so much bigger (TWSS). Blake Neely's soundtrack is perfect. One of the many aspects that stood out to me in this film.
I don't want to get into details but if you're looking for a great new war drama/thriller/action here you go folks! Bravo Aaron Schnieder!
