I remember hearing about Nintendo’s video game adaptation, 'Sonic', a few years back. I didn’t grow up with the game so I didn’t have an expectation going in or even, frankly. My only connection to the film that I was excited about was that a favorite actor/comedian of mine, Ben Schwartz, was slated to voice lead character; 'Sonic'. I had been a fan of Schwartz’s first from a “Funny or Die” comedy skit with Showtime's “Dexter” star Michael C. Hall, then a film called “Peep World” (2010) and finally as Jean-Ralphio in NBC's “Parks and Recreation”.
After awhile I began to forget they were even making a 'Sonic' film until watching one of Kevin Smith & Marc Bernardin’s “Fatman Beyond” episodes and they mentioned that fans had been outraged by the original trailer due to the look of the animation design for 'Sonic' and that the studio/filmmakers actually went back and re-animated it for the fans. That blew my mind! I had never heard of something, at least on that big of a commercial property scale, like that happen before! It peaked my interest!

From there, I began to catch up on all the 'Sonic' hype, build-up and became genuinely excited especially upon realizing the additions of James Marsden, Jim Carrey and a few other familiar faces. With a new trailer out as well, it seemed like most true fans we happy.
Before I could even see it, I remember my sister mentioning to me how great it was having taken her son and his friend. I remember in particular she had mentioned how funny Jim Carrey was and it felt like a nice comeback for him.
Jim Carrey in "Sonic" (2020)
When I finally saw the film I had so much fun! It was such a nice mixture of adventure, wonder, action, comedy and heart. Ben Schwartz was brilliant and seemed to fit perfectly into that energetic little hedgehog. They were able work with his comedic improv so well and incorporate his style into the character in a way I really enjoyed.
My sister was right, I loved Jim Carrey in this! Such a great character that almost feels like a throwback to some of his old classics! James Marsden I’ve just been a huge fan of ever since playing 'Cyclops' in the original “X-Men” films (god I feel old that I have to say ‘original’ for those now) and more recently in HBO’s “Westworld”. It was nice to see a sweeter side of him in this film as well as a more comedic.
It’s a fun ride to go on with the whole family. Some nice comic homages, awesome visual effects and a hilarious cast that packs a punch! Looking forward to seeing where they can explore in the 'Sonic' universe!

"The redesigned Sonic is spot-on while comedian and TV's "Parks and Recreation" star Ben Schwartz brings enough goofy charm and manic energy voicing the anthropomorphic blue hedgehog character." - Casey Chong, Casey's Movie Mania
"I'm a 100% sure this is the best you can get out of a Sonic the Hedgehog movie. Hilarious." - Victor Pineyro, Seventh Art Studio
"Adults, even an aged millennial, should get a kick out of seeing Carrey actually have fun in a role for the first time in years. He taps into all his old manic energy here." - Dan Buffa, KSDK News (St. Louis)
"Sonic the Hedgehog is a fun and entertaining ride for all to enjoy. It found a way to make itself open to both lovers of the video game franchise and newcomers. The humans were unnecessary, save for Jim Carrey, but a sequel will hopefully improve that." - Emmanuel Nolsette, The Movie Blog
"It was what I've been asking for, honestly." - Avaryl Halley, Movie Bitches
