“The Croods: A New Age” (2020)
“The Croods: A New Age” (2020) was one of the most perfect sequels I’d ever seen. I told my story of how I first heard about this franchise in my review for the first “The Croods” (2013) film where I had basically just seen advertisements while working at Target for the 2nd movie and it’s prehistoric and animated aspect peaked my interest. So quickly watched the first one in time for the 2nd one’s release and boy was that one hell of an enjoyable double feature.
So coming right off of minutes after finishing the 1st film, I dived right into this wonderful continuation of these little cavemen’s journey. They were able to bring back everything I loved about the first while still giving me something fresh and exciting!

I loved that they delved more into Guy’s (Ryan Reynolds) relationship with Eep (Emma Stone) and exploring balancing that with family. Wanting their own space and life together. Nicolas Cage was back in action, I mean I don’t know if I would’ve watched the second if he wasn’t coming back. He’s a genuine classic, as Cage as he could ever be in a kid’s movie, but with an animated look and ability to give you something entirely new.

“The Croods: A New Age” (2020)
Catherine Keener, Clark Duke and RIP Cloris Leachman were back as well and just as wonderful as they were before. We had some lovely new additions of which I was huge fans of this their other work; Leslie Mann (Judd Apatow’s wife and actress) and Peter Dinklage (‘Tyrion’ from HBO’s “Game of Thrones”). Kelly Marie Tran (“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” & “Raya and The Last Dragon” - wow just noticed she’s in two movies with Last in them) also joined the cast of “The Croods” this time around! She’s been growing on me for awhile now as an actress.

Just one of the most fun times I’ve had at the movies. A great family friendly franchise with some pretty wonderful characters in a spectacularly visual and creative world. For sure one of the best sequels I've seen to date!

CGC Grading: Gem Mint 10.0
"The Croods: A New Age seems to strike the right tone at every turn. Nothing about the Crood family is sophisticated, but somehow the filmmakers keep their brutishness as a lovable and funny trait no matter what crazy thing they do next." - Alex Bentley, CultureMap
"Faster, funnier and more inventive than its 2013 predecessor." - Luke Goodsell, ABC News (Australia)
"While the story of confinement feels weirdly relevant in a world where lockdowns are the norm, its kindhearted attitude towards nature feels more timely than ever in the wake of a climate emergency." - Peter Gray, The AU Review
"Serves as a reminder of a simpler time in cinema, when family entertainment was a cheerful outing to the multiplexes and animated offerings didn't rebel against their structure" - Peter Gray, The AU Review
"The Croods: A New Age scores on many counts with its overtly imaginative plot, top-class animation and amusing characters." - Ronak Kotecha, The Times of India
"A highly engaging, energetic, wonderfully animated romp spiced by some great action sequences...the film's congenial, soft-centred messaging about tolerance, reconciliation & learning to get on with those considered "the others" is nothing if not timely." - Jim Schembri, jimschembri.com
