"The Host" (2006) - Sam Gall's Movie Review Issue #16 Gem Mint 10.0

THE HOST (2006) directed by Bong Joon-ho

"A monster emerges from Seoul's Han River and begins attacking people. One victim's loving family does what it can to rescue her from its clutches."

You might like this if you like: Bong Joon-ho films (“Parasite”, “Okja”, “Snowpiercer”, “Mother”, “Memories of Murder”), South Korean films, Monster movies but with almost a Christopher Nolan (“Inception”, “The Dark Knight”, “Memento”) or Neil Blomkamp (“Chappie”, “Elysium”, “District 9”) flavor of quality to it, Science Fiction, Horror movies (though I think more people than just horror fans could appreciate this one), Supernatural movies, Action movies. If you’ve seen “Parasite” and enjoyed that one, it’s got the same quality to it but with a supernatural element a little more horror/monster movie genre added in mix. A powerful message about society told through the lens of a supernatural story (like a few other of his films are).

The Host” I discovered a few years back while I was in college and going to film school. It was of course included in one of Tarantino’s favorite film lists and I had to check it out for myself. It was my introduction to Bong Joon-ho at the time and then I sort of forgot about him for a little while and then he popped back up in my life around “Okja” and I started studying more of his work. I am super happy for him and his team for their success with “Parasite”. Although… I think he should’ve had this fame and glory when “The Host” premiered back in 2006.

Again if you enjoyed “Parasite” and wanted to see more of Bong Joon-ho’s work this one’s a great place to start! At least, it’s where I did and I’m loving diving into more of his work. “Memories of a Murder” (2003 crime/drama) is his first feature film and I recommend that as well, “The Host” is his second and both feature Song Kang-ho (who played the father in “Parasite”). I personally am more attracted to the supernatural genre of cinema than I am crime thrillers so that may be my in for this movie. It’s an intellectual/cinematic treat for monster movie lovers.

Go Ah-sung in "The Host" (2006)

I know I’m getting repetitive but I really can’t give anything more away.. Without getting too deep into the message of the film it’s a wonderful blend of suspense, satire and action all rolled into a memorable ride of fun! I hope you guys enjoy!
