"In the early years of the 20th century, the Kingsman agency is formed to stand against a cabal plotting a war to wipe out millions."

Ralph Fiennes in 'The King's Man' (2021)

Now as much as I love the ‘Kingsman’ series and read the first few comic issues by Mark Millar, I still couldn’t help but feel it just was adding to the white male leading heroes of today, and I’m kind of over that by now. There’s just way too many of them. And no, one person of color in a significant role, doesn’t count. Djimon Hounsou was amazing, but he was still the minority. I don’t think I, or the world, was as aware of these statistics when the first one was coming out which I loved and ate up, the second one was fun, but if anything, this new one ranked as my 2nd favorite of the franchise.

Gemma Arterton in 'The King's Man' (2021)

‘The King’s Man’ is still one helluva ride, I just can’t go in without acknowledging everything I’m seeing with in cinema in 2021.

Ralph Feinnes is always fun to watch, and director Matthew Vaughn ('X-Men First Class' & 'Kick-Ass') always seems to do a really damn good job of making people, regardless of their age, extremely badass looking.

Djimon Hounsou in 'The King's Man' (2021)

Gemma Arterton was great, but also felt like their one token woman for their film. Rhys Ifan played a crazy fun character, though many of the ‘villains’ felt like generic stereotypes that mostly just seemed to sum up Russia as evil spies or something.

Rhys Ifans in 'The King's Man' (2021)

Now Harris Dickinson was the great twist of the film I wasn’t expecting and gets a small merit for killing him off when all I kept thinking was they were going to kill off Djimon, but I was pleasantly surprised that they took out the pretty white boy first to give more room to the best character in the film; ‘Shola’ aka Djimon.

Ralph Fiennes (left) & Djimon Hounsou (right) in 'The King's Man' (2021)

Djimon was a standout by far and I just wish he was our leading man, but we still got some really great moments with him but I do think by the 3rd ‘Kingsman’ movie… maybe you should have change it up a bit more.

CGC Grading: Gem Mint 10.0

"An intriguing, absorbing, well-crafted adventure story that offers real excitement, tragedy, emotional drama, and characters who are well-rounded and believable that we can actually believe and invest in." - Paul Mount, Starburst

"It's hard to exactly pinpoint where The King's Man has gone awry, but, despite a clever early twist, it just all feels ploddingly predictable in a join-the-dots-of-history and Kingsman origin-tale kind of way." - James Croot, Stuff.co.nz

"Its fantastical comic-book mentality merging with the boldness of re-writing historical events and figureheads lends The King's Man enough of a pass to be deemed more worthy than it deserves" - Peter Gray, The AU Review

"Awkwardly combining playful quirks and historical references with brutal violence and revisionist conspiracy theories, this intermittently stirring adventure takes on a sketchy quality in which only a fraction of the snippets spark to life." - Todd Jorgenson, Cinemalogue
