'The Mitchells vs the Machines' (2021)

This was such a fun and beautifully touching animated family film!

Two of my favorite human beings; Abbi Jacobson and Danny McBride star in this wild adventure along with the lovely Maya Rudolph from ‘SNL’ and a few other comedic legends I loved in smaller roles.

Going in though, I only knew about Jacobson (‘Broad City’) and McBride (‘Pineapple Express’ / ‘Eastbound & Down’) and that was enough of a sell for me. The animation looked really fun and so did the story. I was in the mood for some sci-fi adventure comedy and they delivered above and beyond!

'The Mitchells vs the Machines' (2021)

One of the aspects I didn’t really remember from the trailer (I usually try to forget the trailer by the time I watch the movie), that Jacobson’s character is an aspiring female filmmaker which could not have been more inspiring and relatable to see let alone in an animated mainstream feature like this one. It got me excited at the idea of it inspiring the next generation of incredible female filmmakers. Ironically this film is directed by a man (two men in fact) and written by four men. It’s strange to me, yet at the same time they are inspiring young females in a good light I think, but those opportunities still seem small behind the screen.

'The Mitchells vs the Machines' (2021)

It was fun to see McBride in a more family friendly manner, he’s been in some PG-13 films, and hasn’t been the McBride I’m always used to, but I guess one for kids and the family didn’t really seem obvious to me but I absolutely loved it! And getting to see those two comedic geniuses bounce off each other is too fun to watch!

I also loved the aspect of the science fiction adventure and superheroes sort of turned on their heads and their strengths are actually our character’s weaknesses. It’s a nice change of pace and I think a healthy message for new to come.

'The Mitchells vs the Machines' (2021)

Probably my first pick for favorite family film of the year! Check it out if you can!
