"The One I Love" (2014) directed by Charlie McDowell

You might like this if you like: “Get Out” (2017), “Us” (2019), the original Twilight Zone series, Charlie McDowell’s work, The Duplass Brothers work, Elisabeth Moss, Mark Duplass as an actor (love him as Pete on FX’s “The League”)

This one might already be painfully familiar to locals… but I was way late (well, a year ago) to the party for this crazy little film. Maybe I was out of town or just not in touch when this film was being made. Somehow went over my head at the time sadly. Jason Segel personally recommended this film to me at lunch a few years ago and only recently did I finally get a chance to watch it. If you’re a fan of Charlie McDowell’s work (“The Discovery” on Netflix is pretty interesting, still gotta check out “Dispatches from Elswhere”) this is one his best and I’m sure a lot of you personally know him already but I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting Charlie but if anyone does can you please tell him how much I LOVED this movie and the rest of his work? He damn well deserves it. Now if you like Jordan Peele’s latest work like “Get Out” (2017) and “Us” (2019) then this one will be right down your alley. Even that I feel is giving too much away.

I want to say, and I REALLY CHERISHED THIS WAY OF EXPERIENCING, I went in KNOWING NOTHING about this movie plot wise and was BLOWN AWAY. Edge of my seat the entire time… I was terrified but fascinated and I couldn’t look away. I started it late at night before I went to bed. I was tired. Yawning. Thought I’d just throw this on but it shook me awake with curiosity. All I knew was Mark Duplass (who I love as a writer/actor especially as Pete on FX’s “The League”) and Elisabeth Moss (“Handmaid’s Tale”) who I’ve loved since her hilarious role in “Get Him to the Greek” (2010) were in it. And that’s all I needed.

There is something special about going in knowing nothing about this film. If you like those two actors enough like I did… I think you will be pleased. Again, referencing Jordan Peele’s work is about the closest I will go to even describing this movie’s feels. Alright… I know a lot of people won’t take this chance so I’ll just say fans of the original “Twilight Zone” would really appreciate this modern story. If you’re a fan of the Duplass brothers film work like “Safety Not Guaranteed” (2012, producers) you might like this one too. Gonna leave this one short.
